A series of black and white photographs, shot on 120 film, of teenagers from my suburban rural community. Capturing moments of self-possessed performance, they explore the curated and contrived nature of youth culture. The subjects are people I’ve met by posting my photographs on Instagram. Evoking fashion and editorial aesthetics, they expound upon how young people use the internet, especially social media platforms like Instagram, to mediate the different aspects of their multifaceted sense of identity. The work is created in collaboration through conversations and prompts, both of theirs and my own, in an effort for them to see and be seen. This body of work is ultimately concerned with identity, performance and the emancipation of the performer.
